Are rats mean, nasty, ugly little rodents? I don't think so. They are sweet after you get to know them.

Yes, unless you hang them by their tail for a long time! LOL, Just kidding, my brother did that (he had a rat for his snake).

I had rats once. They do make a good pet. However I didn't at the time know that there was a difference between pet rats and feeders..
So I walked into the pet store one day and seen a mama delivering babies. The other rats all in the same cage were eating them. I then took the poor thing home with me, and man can they have babies. Well their is a difference and the rat I bought and brought home was a feeder. She started eating her own babies. Only an animal person would do what I did next, let me tell you.
I got out the heating pad, took a feeding tube I have for my dogs and gave those little babies pet milk, through a feeding tube, just a few drops. They didn't make it, but it wasn't that I didn't try. I cried when they were all passing away, and the hubby just shook his head.
Well that started my kids wanting rats. Next thing you know all the girls had to have one, and so my hubby made this HUGE cage, as he is a handy man. Once they were gone, as they don't live long I got my first glider, that led to more, until I eneded up with 5, so I can stay a hobby breeder and give them all the attention they need. So if I have the gliders around me all day, and put them back later in the afternoon, you will find one of my girls, usually my middle child Angelica walking around with them like a prize treasure walking around the house.
Good thing I make suggie stuff, between me and the girls I always have to make something new for them, or I will never here the end of that one. Especailly if they like material that I just bought. I somehow get in the middle of being talked into making products. Oh well, I can only hope that they learn from me someday.

In reply to your original question, rats are not "mean, nasty, ugly little rodents." They are the coolest of pets. They are smart and funny and can be quite affectionate. And feeder rats are tough to love, but you can still do it. Rats from a good breeder who loves and socializes them from a very young age are the best. I have two female rats now, named George and Chester They come from a central Florida Rattery called "Bella Ratta" and they are the coolest. Now, a rat might eat a small snake, but it is not on their preferred diet list.

Rats will bite and really hurt snakes if you are not careful. But it is only in self defense.

We have snakes and one has a bad scar above her eye from a rat bite. It got infected and we had to give antibiotic shots to her.

I was reading this and thinking that a rat eatting a snake wasn't too probable, but to injure one would be more likely. However no one has stated the kind of snake that we are talking about. Is it like a gardener snake, or a big snake. That would narrow it down for me.

I am not sure but I know if they attack the neck (which is probably where they attck) then they are less likely to get bit and more likely to lethally injure the snake.
